Picnic wins Dutch logistics award
Online supermarket Picnic has won the Dutch Logistics Award 2022, organized by the Netherlands’ Logistics Management Association (vLm).
The professional jury praised Picnic’s delivery concept and exceptional performance, based on the high load factor and high productivity enabled by its targeted milk-run delivery approach. Picnic is focused on the distribution planning and delivery to customers within a 20-minute time slot.
Unlike traditional supermarkets, Picnic pursues a very data-driven model using its own software for both internal and external activities, according to the jury report. The company was also praised for its far-reaching digitalization, such as working with mobile apps both in the warehouse and in the last-mile delivery process, and the relatively low level of inventory in its supply chain concept.
Impressive transformation
The Netherlands’ largest online supermarket has undergone an impressive transformation. When Picnic started in Amersfoort in 2015, it picked its orders in a section of Dutch supermarket chain Boni’s distribution centre. Today, the retailer generates around a billion euros in sales, has almost nationwide coverage and operates eight distribution centres in the Netherlands. The ‘mobile supermarket’ is also active in Germany and France.
